Update to The Yuri Anime List
The Yuri content Grading System + demo of The “List”.
For both veterans and newcomers alike, here’s the most accurate yuri anime guide that I can think of. Keep in mind that as long as anime continue existing and yuri remains a viable genre, this list will be endless. Keep in mind, canon or subtext is not an issue. As long as the girls in question show ANY REMOTE SIGN OF ROMANTIC OR SEXUAL INTEREST IN ONE ANOTHER, meaning touching, more than friend like behavior, repeated teasing with a goal of earning the girl in question’s attention, it counts.
Here’s how it works. The highlighted ones I’ve already reviewed and you can check those out for more details. I’ll post how many episodes the show has and if I haven’t reviewed it, I’ll include more details until the day I finally review it (It ain’t easy reviewing all this stuff. I’m not feal87). Lastly there’s the intensity level which indicates how intense the yuri is.
Grade 1: Main Genre. Yuri is undoubtedly the driving force of the anime.

Upotte!!:10 ONAs + 1 OVA The yuri in this show makes no sense.
Sora no Woto: 12 episodes + 2 OVAs. Intensity: Low.
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt: 12 episodes. Scanty and Kneesocks have an incestuous meal in one episode.
Another: 12 episodes + 1 OVA. There’s a pair of background girls who are always seen together in very touching moments. The prologue OVA also contains minor twincest.
Tantei Opera Milky Holmes + Milky Holmes 2 2 seasons (12 episodes each). Content: Cordelia in melodrama mode flirting with Herc and some noticeable Sherlock/Arsene stuff appear every now and then.
Medaka Box : 2 seasons (12 episodes each). Content: One kiss and it’s occasionally mentioned
AKB0048: 13 episodes. Intensity: Medium. It’s there but needs a little bit more.
Natsuiro Kiseki: 12 episodes. Intensity: Low. Similar to AKB0048.
Yumekui Merry: 12 episodes. Content: Some new character might like a girl on the show who’s drooling over a guy, so, whatever.
Kore wa Zombie Desuka?: 2 seasons (12 and 8 respectively) + 1 OVA. Content; 1 non-consensual kiss scene.
Ookami-san: 12 episodes. Content: 1 non-consensual kiss.
Working!! + Working!! 2nd season: 2 seasons (13 episodes each). Content: Yachiyo likes Kyouko but nothing comes of it.
Softenni 12 episodes + several shorts. There’s some kissing and fondling here and there but nothing serious.
Baka Test: 2 seasons (13 episodes each) + 2 OVAs. Content: 1 pointless imagining scene that’s quickly shunned. Still a good series.
The Sacred Blacksmith: 12 episodes. Content: Some snuggling.
Kampfer: 12 episodes + 2 OVAs: Content: Lots of yuri fanservice that goes nowhere. My personal favorite from this batch…as bad as it is as a whole.
Seitokai no Ichizon: 2 seasons (12 episodes and the 2nd one is currently unknown). Content: Some Chizuru and Aka-chan fun time.
Yoku Wakaru Gendai Maho: 12 episodes + 1 OVA. Content: Subtext.
Hyakko: 13 episodes + 1 OVA. Content: Random.
Dog Days: 2 seasons (12 and 13) and an upcoming 3rd one. The yuri can mostly be found in the 2nd season.
Maken-Ki: 12 episodes. Random scenes.
High School of the Dead: 12 episodes + 1 OVA: Watch the OVA if you want juicy yuri. Nuff said.
Binbou Shimai Monogatari: 12 episodes. Content: Future incest romantic relationship.
Mahoraba: Heartful Days: 26 episodes. Content: Last minute confession.
Doki Doki School Hours: 20 episodes. Content: The Chosen One.
Girls Bravo: 2 seasons (12 episodes each). Content: Not enough Kosame goodness.
Popotan: 12 episodes. Content: Not enough Konami.
Avenger: 12 episodes. Content: It’s a girl?!
Stellvia of the Universe: 26 episodes. Content: Most pathetic hetero couple ever and poor lesbian pays for it. At least there’s another couple…who barely get any screen time together of course.
Haibane Renmei: 12 episodes. Content: Subtext is there but it isn’t strong enough.
Ayane’s High Kick: 2 OVAs. Content: Subtext at best.
Battle Athletes: 1 6 OVA series and 1 26 episode retelling. Content: It’s there but needed a little more.
Murder Princess: 6 OVAs. Content: No animated conclusion, only in the manga.
Senran Kagura: 12 episodes. Yagyuu and Hibari show some yurirific bonds. Other than that, groping and other ecchi stuff.
Tears of Tiara: 26 episodes.
.hack Sign: 3 seasons(26, 12, 26) + 3 OVAs. Intensity: Medium.
Yumeiro Patisserie: 2 seasons (50 and 13 respectively). Possible incest in episode 28 but I don’t know if it went anywhere.
KissXSis: 1 OVA series (5 episodes) and 1 12 episode TV season. Some intense, yet pointless scenes.
Durarara: 25 episodes + 2 OVAs and 1 movie. I heard there’s a couple in this one.
Freezing: 12 episodes + several specials.
Manyuu Hiken-Chou: 12 episodes + several specials. Some girls have the hots for one another, especially the protagonist’s best friend.
Nekogami Yaoyorozu: 12 episodes. 2 girls compete to become the main character’s girlfriend while she herself doesn’t take them seriously.
Star Driver: 25 episodes.
Penguin Girl: 22 ONAs. Content: Subtext and fanservice.
Sankarea: 12 episodes + 1 OVA. The zombie girl kisses another girl who likes the male lead once and that’s it.
Haiyoru Nyaruko-san: 1 set of 9 ONAs. 2 TV seasons (12 episodes each). Kuuko is madly in love with Nyaruko…for some reason. Sure, she gives one early on but it’s irrelevant. At least Kuuko’s awesome.
Sengoku Collection: 25 episodes. Several instances of yuri goodness. May promote this one to Grade 3 after finishing it.
Yosuga no Sora: 13 episodes. Pointless.
Sekirei: 2 seasons (12 each). There’s a villainous yuri couple and some other yuri stuff in between.
Akikan: 12 episodes + 1 OVA. One of the soda warriors is in love with her “drinker”, but said “drinker” likes a guy. Too bad since the yuri soda warrior’s the best character on the show.
Rosario to Vampire: 2 seasons (13 episodes each). Some yuri moments.
School Rumble: 2 seasons (26 episodes each) + 2 sets of OVAs. Content: Suggestive older women.
Gakuen Alice: 26 episodes. Content: Crush.
Kaleidostar: 51 episodes + 3 OVAs. Content: Layla wants Sora but has too many mood swings for poor Sora to handle and accept her nice bussoms.
Love Hina: 25 episodes + 2 specials and 1 3 OVA sequel. Content: non-consensual fanservice.
Zero no Tsukaima: 4 seasons (Season 1, 13. Seasons 2-4, 12). Content: Some random yuri moments.
Grade 5: Subtext at most. These shows REQUIRE fanfics to work.

Well, I shouldn’t have added Lain to the list because I haven’t seen it yet. I only heard rumors about the yuri. This list is far from updated. I still have many old shows I have yet to see.

Speaking of Madoka, I’m assuming you are planning to wait until the end of the current season before adding Lagrange, Pirates, Symphogear, etc to the list.
I was wondering, was this only going to be an anime only list, or were you thinking about adding manga/light novels too? The manga versions of Hidamari Sketch and K-On might just boost both series each one grade. A couple of the Blue Drop manga series, especially the first series, could possibly be Grade 1.
Also when you consider the entirety of the Strike Witches cannon, not just the anime, the intensity might just increase to high due to the number of both cannon and implied couples.
I haven’t read enough manga to make a list of that yet. I do plan on doing that eventually. As for LNs, I have no idea where to find those…without buying them online.
As for the ongoing shows right now…yup, I need more confirmation and will wait till they end before adding them to the list.

BRS TV has to finish before I make my final decision. 2 episodes aren’t enough to confirm this. Also that rating is for the OVA, not the TV anime.

As for the shounen anime comment, shounen isn’t my favorite genre (Possibly my least favorite for the moment) but that’s not saying the genre sucks as there are some non-action oriented shounen out there that I’ve greatly enjoyed.
What about IS (Infinite Stratos)?
This only applies to shows I’ve seen so far. I haven’t, nor have any interest in watching IS at the moment. But if I were to guess, it’d probably be Grade 4 yuri, with it being a harem and all.

Grade 1 Yuri anime? Not sure. Any of the other grades? Plenty. Saki season 2, Railgun season 2, Hyperdimension Neptunia (Hopefully) and there’s currently (Fall 2012 season), Jormungand season 2, Seitokai no Ichizon season 2, Hidamari Sketch season 4. There was also Sengoku Collection in the Spring and Summer that I’ve yet to mention here. Dog Days season 2 is another one.
Keep in mind, these aren’t 100% yuri shows but there’s (will be) definitely yuri to be found in them.

Unfortunately, these are the only Grade 1 shows out right now. Do give the other grades a try. However, if you REALLY need Grade 1 stories, then manga is where it’s at.
Do you consider Maria Holic a yuri anime? I don’t know if you’ve already mentioned it (I read through the list many times.) I’m no big anime fan, but I am definitely a fan of girl-girl loving so I was just curious as to whether you’d consider it yuri or not.

Most of them are already on the list and in their respective Grades. Unfortunately, none of them are new. So far, the Grade 1 shows on the list are currently the only ones. There are some on the video I haven’t mentioned in my list but none of those are Grade 1 either.
Let me explain in more detail what Grade 1 means. Grade 1 shows are those that you know are all about yuri. You don’t have to look up anything online. no subplots, no surprise yuri. The show is mainly about yuri. So far, the ones in the Grade 1 list are the only ones right now.

In any case, yuri or not, it’s one of the genuinely entertaining shows of the season so you should give it a try.

I’m confused now, I searched them but it kinda ruin everything(with the males there disturbing). Hmmmm, I can’t find real Yuri(Real Lover) on google but yours… yes… there are quite real lovers but on the other grades it makes me uncomfortable to watch. Nobody said it was easy finding couples in the Grade 2 and lower shows. Some of them you need to endure male interference, but most of the Grade 2 shows still have a great focus on yuri but it’s not THE main focus.
Basically, the lower the grade (1-5) the more you’ll need to endure for yuri.
How did they make those anime? I want to make one, using the program on my laptop(If THERE is this program) but the bad thing is I can’t find this program. Do you happen to know this one Hentai (pardon the messiness of my explanation) in which this young girl goes to a Catholic boarding school and there’s rape and whatnot with the nuns and the priest (also there’s something to do with her mother) , but I believe there’s two scenes where the main character makes love (no raping here) to another girl. I’ve seen Cream Lemon: Escalation and its similar but not quite it. I’ve looked through these and I don’t think they are the one I’m looking for, but thanks for the suggestions of what it might’ve been. The intensity merely refers to the level of sexual content and the shows you mentioned, Blue Drop excluded, all have a medium level. High level means it’s very close to being a hentai, or is one, but the ones that are hentai are labeled as such.

KPM is on my schedule as of now. The reason El Cazador is Grade 2 is because the yuri does not become explicit until the halfway point. Also, for a show to be Grade 1, the yuri has to be advertised from the start, not revealed later on.

Heya, I was wondering if you knew of an anime similar to the buildup of Strawberry Panic, I loved the anime from start to finish and was wondering if there was anything similar/really close to it.
Define the buildup you’re looking for. I suppose one of the Grade-1 and Grade-2 anime may have the kind you want to see but I need more data.
I loved the tension between Shizuma and Nagisa, and how Nagisa came to love and understand Shizuma, there was a lot of romance and passion between all the characters (not a lot of sex or nudity) but I felt compelled to continue watching each episode. I suppose its also similar to the Kashimashi: Girl meets Girl anime, how after Hazumu changes he/she begins to feel more love and compassion from everyone else around them.
I think to best describe what I’m looking for is a relationship buildup, introduced to a brand new character in a new area (school, home etc) and they fawn over someone, and its not instantaneous love between characters, but it builds up over time until the last couple of episodes where they kiss (or more). And throughout the entire plot you’re thinking, will they work out or not.
Its a lot to ask hehe. Sorry for this
