The Legend of Korra episode 3: The Equalist Revolution Begins

Well, since the show had officially aired nationwide 3 weeks ago, it’s time we take a look at the long awaited 3rd episode, at least for those who haven’t found ways to get a sneak peek online that is.

Butata, but since the name is close to the Papiamento word for potato (batata), I’ll call him Mr Potato head should he appear again. Basically he’s the Fire Ferrets’ tenant and manager and they’d better come up with 30000 Yuans or else they’re out of the tournament. We also learn the obvious fact Bo Lin and Mako are orphans. Well we can’t have an adventure show without traditional tragic past characters.

Pabu the ferret will be taking Momo’s place from now on as Naga the polar dog’s sidekick. So there we go, Naga and Pabu instead of Appa and Momo. Personally I like Naga and Pabu more…for obvious reasons. Anyway, Bo Lin comes up with the idea of using Pabu’s “skills” in an animal act to rake in some dough while Mako disagrees, but Bo Lin does it anyway. Suddenly an old acquaintance of Bo Lin’s asks him to take a job working as a bodyguard for one of the Triple Threat Mafia groups. Bo Lin accepts after seeing the huge stack of cash.

Mako returns to the apartment after finishing his side job but Bo Lin hasn’t, so he goes to Korra and they go searching for him. They find a lead and see Bo Lin tied up in the back of a truck. They give chase but are taken down by some of the Equalists’ goons who have a Chi Block fighting style similar to Tai Li’s. Naga chases them off.

Yup, the writers definitely want to make these two the obligatory romantic couple in the show. Whatever.

So Korra gets an idea to go to the park where she saw the Equalist supporter with the loudspeaker and interrogate him to learn Amon, leader of the Equalists is hosting the “Revelation”. They figure out where it’s being held.

At the location of the meeting, Amon makes a speech and reveals he too lost everything to a Fire Bender, interestingly enough the same thing that happened to Bo Lin and Mako’s parents (They were also killed by a Fire Bender. Could it have been the same person or just a coincidence? I’m betting on the former.) He then reveals what the “Revelation” is: He discovered the ability to permanently remove all bending powers from a bender, and uses the Triple Threat gang leaders to demonstrate his power. Mako comes up with a plan to free Bo Lin and escape, but not before dealing with another tough goon.

To sum things up: We learn about the fate of Bo Lin and Mako’s parents, the Equalists’ plans and Amon having suffered a similar past as the brothers, coincidence or connected? Good episode overall. One thing I’ve noticed is the fight scenes are still one of the show’s highlights and so far the plot is moving at a steady pace. Looking forward to next week.

Just a random note. It’s not spelled “Tai Li” it’s “Ty-Lee”.

I’m not good with names but at least I know who I’m talking about. I already got a complaint on messing up the names a while back.

In short, what’s in a name?
