Another episode 10: Not so Short and sweet summary

Exams delayed this episodic analysis so I’ll make it short due to everyone already having seen it. Here’s episode 10:

Angry tails wakes up from a dream where she was crying about her older brother and she meets Male Lead after stumbling off a classic anime hill.

The tape’s content is restored and we learn the curse stopped after Tape Guy kills some random student who turns out to be the mystery extra student. After that, the curse supposedly ends.

After hearing the tape, of course none of the 4 dare kill the “extra student” if they happen to find him/her.

I forgot to mention the class goes to a Summer Home after the death of Drama Girl #1 from last week’s episode. At a banquet, Angry Tails gets up and announces Mei as being responsible for all the deaths because she refused to follow the “extra student” treatment. She demands Mei apologize. Mei sees nothing being resolved by doing this but apologizes anyway. Male Lead stands up for Mei, mentally upsetting Angry Tails.

Suddenly a random student breaks into an asthmatic state and conveniently doesn’t have his inhaler with him and the phone connections are down. How convenient. Mr Librarian takes him to the hospital.

Misaki Yomiyama.

Thankful to ML for defending her honor, Mei invites him to her room. There they look at the old class picture and notice Misaki Yomiyama’s face being blurry.

Mei reveals some secrets to ML. First of all she can sense the undead, meaning she can tell when someone is no longer of this world yet still wanders on it. The 2nd secret being both the identity of herself and her “cousin”. Both Mei and Misaki are twin sisters separated, or rather switched, after Mei’s birth because Mei’s aunt miscarried her stillborn child. So they traded Mei for Misaki because Mei’s first name isn’t Misaki and other financial matters but the important part is because of the name. Yukiyo (Kirika’s aunt) changed her name to Kirika for some reason (Probably to separate herself from the Mitsuoka family lineage or something). Yukiyo’s been paranoid ever since granny revealed the truth to Mei and Mei wanted to meet her real mom and sister. She eventually found a way.

Mei and Misaki hung out together in secret till Misaki eventually died. Mei denied her death being related to the “curse” but eventually accepted her death when ML joined the school.

Uh-oh, not a good sign.

Another revelation is that the curse didn’t begin in May like the students believe, it was in April before ML arrived, confirming ML to not be the “extra”, or so Mei believes based on her undead vision. I still have my suspicions but we’ll see.

Now you may ask, why has Mei kept this fact a secret for so long? Because she was scared of both it being true and other people finding out. Weird but understandable. The 2nd reason is she didn’t think it would change anything finding out who the real “extra” is…until now.

As Mei was about to reveal the “extra”s identity, Energy Guy conveniently shows up and tells them he killed Megane Guy, at least I think that’s Megane guy. Whatever, he killed someone.

Okay, so I failed ot keep it short but I successfully wrote it, so whatever.

P.S.: Background lesbian couple sighting. Always good seeing them.

For Sir Steven Regal.

I have to wonder, why did they suddenly decide to swing Anger Tails back to being angry? Not only that, but being angry at Mei! It’s not her fault ML decided to try to get close to her. I honestly don’t know why they are making her less likeable again. Also does that mean she was always mad at Mei all the times we thought she was glaring at ML? I can understand a little why she would have been angry at ML all those times, but at Mei?

I’m not quite sure if I totally like this “Mei sees the Color Out of Space with her glass eye so she can tell who is dead” plot development. Mostly because its just way to convent. The characters need a way to tell who is dead? Mei is the McGuffin Girl that does the trick. Maybe there was better build up in the book.

Actually if it was the Color Out of Space, that would explain things.

I do like the reason why she gave for not using her glass eye powers before. It sounded like she was tired of seeing dead people everywhere in Yomiyama! Which makes sense. The curse covers all of Yomiyama, so why should extra people only appear in Class 3 of Yomi North? People only notice since so many accidents happen to one small group. Did the curse really start in 1972, or did people only notice then that there is a curse?

Also I like why she never told anyone before, because what use would it be? She couldn’t just jump up in class and shout “J’ACCUSE” at the extra person (though that would be funny if she did exactly that). Who would believe her? Anyway until the tape, that knowledge really didn’t help anyway.

While its always nice seeing Anzu and Aki, or Sayuri, because then we know they are still alive, the problem is how this show likes to kill off the background characters we do see. I feel probably we might not get an answer to who is the extra person until the very last episode. I fear next episode will be mostly about killing of the most of the cast because the story is almost over.

I’m going to watch this series to the bitter end, but I fear I might not like it.

Oh, I forgot to add, I hope you did well on your exams.

Thanks for the good luck wishes dood.

Angry Tails will always be Angry Tails no matter what. It’s a fact of life. Ah well, at least she’s hot.

Mei being able to sense the dead is basic anime logic coming to play. It doesn’t make sense but in the grand scheme of things, neither does this Final Destination-esque curse.

Yes indeed. It all comes down to: “Back then I didn’t know if it would be of any use and if I told anyone, would they believe me? Of course not”

Maybe the answers on how or when the curse began will be revealed in the episode 0 OVA or special.

Yes, the possibility of all 3 being killed off by the end of the show is quite high. Still, at least the show gets major cred for having included a lesbian couple.

    You are welcome.

I’m thinking if we don’t get an answer by the last episode, we probably won’t. Episode 0 is all original story, but I think it just expands on the flash backs of Mei and Misaki. I don’t think they would invent an anime only answer.

As for not in anything else, it seems like none of the background characters we know from the anime were actually characters in either the novel or the manga. Either in the novel and the manga most of the class didn’t get names and faces, or the class was very different then the one we see in the anime.

    • Overlord-G says:

Hey, more of Mei and Misaki together is fine by me. Both are adorable.

Anime are known for inserting original characters not present in the source material, so it’s nothing new.

  3. I think it’s that megane guy too. Because the short cut scene where he is walking up the stairs. What i’m really scared right now is the granma(the old women who is sharpening her knife). I think a mass murder might be under way.

Misaki Yomiyama.. Well I have nothing to say. He was the one who started all this curse thingy anyway. The mystery and why it happened is still unclear. :(

    • Overlord-G says:

Weird mojo going on around these parts and there isn’t much time left for a definitive answer as we near closer to the end. Killer grannies would be a bit too scary for us to handle. Like little kids, psychotic senior citizens can be quite the scary individuals.
