BLACK★ROCK SHOOTER TV episode 5: Sanity’s Requiem.

Hooooooo nelly, this show keeps getting more epic and darker (For better or worse depending on your tastes) as BRS faces her toughest enemy yet, Cyberzombies! This is episode 5.

WARNING! DO NOT READ THIS UNTIL AFTER YOU’VE SEEN THE EPISODE!

The Necron Army.

Black Rock Kick.

Necrolossus.

BRS and DM have faced each other before and DM lost. This time however, she made a phone call to a certain cybernetic army of the undead from outer space to aid her in total domination. With BGS’ plans set in motion, DM unleashes the power of Warhammer 40k’s Necron army in her long awaited rematch with BRS.

A present for Yuu.

Hair.

She’s lost it.

How dare you?

Meanwhile in the real world…Yomi’s in veeeeery bad shape. She gives Yuu a matching bracelet like Mato’s…made from her hair. Mato finally notices her lover’s agony in arts and crafts as she continues to cut her hair. Her mom picks her up. Mato hears her classmates call Yomi crazy and it pisses her off but when Kagari 2.0 said Yomi broke and her heart died, Mato bitch slapped K to little effect, only the groupies defended her.

We notice the reason why Yomi’s mom was in a bad mood as Yomi’s room is a war zone.

Uh-oh, looks like as some animeniacs had guessed, Yuu knows all about Counselor of Doom’s plan to mess with Yomi’s head and CoD’s response is most disturbing.

The Tiny Bird’s tragic end.

Lovers torn by deceit and manipulation.

Back at Mato’s room, we read more pages of The Tiny Bird story and learn the story’s tragic ending (I need to look that book up). Mato falls asleep and witnesses the grueling battle between BRS and DM as Strength continues watching. She awakens from the nightmare and desperately alters the book’s ending.

Desperate girl in love.

Counselor of Doom’s madness revealed.

The next day CoD calls Mato to her lair. She asks Mato if she wants to save Yomi. Mato doesn’t know what she means but she obviously does…CoD proceeds to temporarily strangle her. “You want to save her? Then why don’t you die her.” It’s 100% clear now that Mato and BRS are CoD’s main targets. Lastly she tells Mato to head to the art room for a surprise.

Mato now knows  of Yomi’s feelings for her.

Blurry Baby Yuu.

Yuu’s house.

Hoo boy, things get even crazier after that. As Mato is in a trance during practice, she notices Yuu’s absent and asks everyone where she is. The weird part is that none of the girls knows who Yuu is. Shocked yet again, Mato reminisces of how distant from everyone except Mato Yuu has been since elementary. Then she goes further by saying she barely remembers Yuu herself. As she tries to remember where Yuu’s house supposedly is, there’s only a river at the location.

The time has come.

Yuu then appears and tells Mato everything about the Other World and her connection to BRS. Well this is a new way for Mato to discover BRS’ existence. Also, she explains how once the alter egos of the girls are defeated, all the pain, suffering, grief and love they feel vanishes, forgetting all the pain they felt and the one responsible. Mato now knows what must be done to save both their sanity and love.

Tortured soul.

Mato rightfully says it’s wrong for someone’s feelings to be decided through a fight to the death and it’s best to talk things over. Then… Yuu confesses her feelings for Mato and wants to help Mato save Yomi for she agrees with Mato’s way of thinking. She then kisses Mato, transporting her to the other world, continuously warning Mato of the risks

However, it appears she may be too late.

I think Insane Black Rock Shooter might make an appearance…

Anyway, I just hope the creators won’t mess up on the next episode.

    • Overlord-G says:

Right now it’s anyone’s guess what the writers will cook up next. Hmm, BRS giving into the Satsui no Hadou and turning “evil” eh? Interesting.

    • Overlord-G says:

Which is why I put the evil in quotes…maybe berserk is a better term. Personally, I’m scratching my head as to why the haters hate this show other than it being over the top angst. It’s basically the same thing as the OVA multiplied by 10. Besides, it’s a show based off a music video. What were they expecting? A show that SOLELY takes place in the Other World?

Maybe I’m more accepting due to being a yuri fan. Either that or it’s because I’m 24. I dunno but so far the show’s been pretty good.. Then again my taste in anime is wide and I’m only picky with harem and mecha shows.

      • SparkNorkx says:

I believe having Black Rock Shooter (without her other self and the other world) on her own adventures would be much better or perhaps a whole new different story and there would be probably less haters. In some way, they are just kinda recycling a bunch of things from the OVA. Also, the psychological/drama problems that Black Rock Shooter’s self and company are having is just a downer for me.

The show is not really based off on a music video though…

    • Overlord-G says:

BRS adventures, huh. That’s what the PSP game and manga are for. Hmm, I thought it was based off some Hatsune Miku video…I’ll look it up later when I feel like it.

Well I pretty much made it clear in the 1st episode impression that those who enjoyed the OVA will like this. Those who didn’t (yourself included)…you get the picture.

      • SparkNorkx says:

Of course but I’m still following it because there’s some action and it’s Black Rock Shooter. xD

The manga and PSP game are just different because their just alternative universes. Hmm.. But, it would be nice if they turn the manga into an anime.

The Hatsune Miku video is based on the OVA. You kinda got it opposite.

      • Rincewind says:

Huke draw Black Rock Shooter, the guys of Supercell loved the drawings and decided to make a song about Black, with Hatsune Miku as the vocalist.
Then an OVA was made based on the music video and the drawings of Huke.

That’s the story of Black Rock Shooter. So, yes, everything is based on the music video and the drawings of Huke.

      • Overlord-G says:

There we go. I was confused by when the guy above me said the song was inspired by the OVA when clearly the song came first.

there we go. BRS’s drawings inspired a song. There was no mythos or story to begin with. So how can you complain about something not meeting expectations when there wasn’t any material to work with!? I don’t count the manga/doujins. those are fan work at best. As for the game, it supports my point of BRS not working as an action/adventure anime. It wouldn’t work. BRS can be an action/RPG video game at best. The fact the OVA and TV anime exist in the first place is a praiseworthy accomplishment. Plus it’s completely unexpected, insane and gloriously headache inducing.

    • Overlord-G says:

I only heard of BRS from Miku and the OVA so I know not of the illustration and stuff. Besides, this show’s violent, messed up and yurirific and I like it that way. For those who don’t, go watch Nisemonogatari or something. Overrated piece of crap that shames its million times superior prequel.

  2. legacyhunter says:

    I didn’t listen to the warning… Mujajaja~ xD

anyway… So DM is now DEAD ._. CoD was successful and… Yu just kissed her @-@…. Yuri.. Like.. XD but I am dissapointed o .o..

  3. Jay says:

One more crap coming from this and I am officially dropping the hell out of the series.

    • Overlord-G says:

I still don’t get why people bash this show. Whatever, it’s not my problem.

      • I guess we know why there has been war since man set foot on this earth!

        – Different View point!

And why they are here to stay

        – Difference in opinion

        Oh well.

I for one I’m already lining this up on my 2011 list!

Mato as master of fiction while Yomi does the sketches? This yuri project is gonna be deadly awesome!

        ‘Deadly’ get it?

        LOL

I really can’t understand how Yomi’s Mom has survived the gaol until now! She must be the strongest willed character in the show that’s for sure!

As for dear, dear Dead Master Yomi

        “…”

      • Overlord-G says:

Yes indeed miss BG, it’s sad how not all of us can agree on everything. Oh well.

You’re correct. 5 great yuri shows have passed and more are coming this Summer…though Spring may also have some surprises.

You’re right about Yomi’s mom. With a psycho yandere and her daughter snapping beyond psychological help, it’s a wonder how she hasn’t gone crazy herself.

      • Rincewind says:

I have a theory, the massive awesomeness and yuriness of this show is too much for some people to handle.

THEY’RE NOT PREPARED!! (In Illidan voice).

      • Overlord-G says:

That’s a pretty good answer dood.

      • Jay says:

I admit, I am not prepared for that one. Oh, I want to see iBRS (no really, I made that up.)!

  4. Stevie Nix says:

This series is getting more and more insane! Hell Insane Black Rock Shooter finally enters the fray next week. That at least explains why Insane BRS was included with the special edition of the DVDs/BDs. I wonder what other versions of BRS we might see.

So its confirmed that Yuu both actively knows of the Other World and she was working for Saya-sensei, but now she has rebelled because of her feelings for Mato.

So biggest questions: Does Yuu not actually exist? Has it always been this way? Are Mato’s memories of her implanted? Maybe people without otherselves can’t remember her for some reason.

What if both Saya and Yuu don’t exist and who we are seeing are Black Gold Saw’s and Strength’s projections into our world? Maybe they don’t exist because they died long ago. If a person dies in the regular world, what happens to their otherself? Especially if there feelings are not resolved?

The PV for episode 06 makes it look like we may get some answers, and even more insanity.

I do not think Deadmaster is dead, I think maybe despite all what happened Mato prevented BRS from killing her.

I can not wait until next week.

    • Overlord-G says:

The reason I don’t think Dead Master died yet is because she didn’t get Highlandered, only stabbed and let’s not forget BRS has endured A DRILL THROUGH HER BELLY! So yeah, having DM die like that makes no sense.

Insane BRS looks to be pretty cool and her upcoming battle with BGS will be intense.

My one main question is what the heck does Counselor of Doom want with BRS? Why does she want to kill her, or based on the preview why did she mourn Mato and BRS merging? Maybe that’s not part of her plan? I dunno. We’ll find out next week and for now it’s mere speculation.

Lady Z brought up a good theory of Yuu being a ghost that only those who have other world selves can see. Aside from Kagiri who Yuu never met in the world, all the other girls who had other world selves stopped seeing or remembering her after their other selves died. Another theory is that the teenage girl sitting next to Yuu in the episode 6 PV is a younger Saya and perhaps she wants to bring Yuu back to life or something. It’s an interesting theory, but the question would then be when exactly did Saya and Yuu meet for the 1st time. Maybe the Yuu Mato had known since childhood really is a projected memory as you said.

Again, I still don’t get why haters hate. This time they don’t have any good reasons other than hardcore fanboy hate.

  5. Anilrahc says:

Yuu did not kiss Mato, their foreheads touched.

  6. Rei says:

Episode was damn epic! The show hurts my brain. It was good. Finally there was some explanation what is going on. And Yuu doesn’t cast a shadow. Ermm i know where this is going. Insane BRS is going to be awesome!

  7. feal87 says:

The Necrons are here! Run away! We need an Eldar Webway powered up! >_<

    • Overlord-G says:

FINALLY! Someone who knows Warhammer. I honestly think the concept design behind Dead Master must have been inspired by the Necron race. Her domain HAD to be an unintentional (Or maybe it was) homage to the Necrons. It just had to be.

  8. persocom says:

I love the way this is turning out, even with it scheduled for a mere 8 episodes it doesn’t cease to hold my attention from beginning to end every episode. I still see many hating on the show, based only off the hype (which has been overdone for years) and the schoolgirl part of it, but I don’t understand how anyone could hate it at this point. The story is intense, the romance is strong, the characters are freaking nuts and the action is top notch. BRS is total win at this point XD

    • Overlord-G says:

Exactly dood. /here’s my main gripe with the haters. You see, some wanted ti to be an action/adventure sci-fi…my problem with that is that it’ll contain comedy and when I look at the BRS characters…humor is the last thing I would associate with them. They do not look funny at all. they are serious, which is my main praise with this show. when was the last time you saw a show this insane? Not even Another is this intense…then again Another is a mystery anime so its somewhat slow pace is intentional. Anyway, I love this show and will be sad when it ends.

    • Anilrahc says:

Yup. On a side note, Puella Mahou Shoujo Madoka is also good, haters gonna hate; 26 episodes is better they say. Nope, you have to watch it with an open mind.

  9. Although they didn’t kiss, it certainly looks like it. It takes away from Yuu not having a shadow, the kiss is more important. It can be Mato’s first kiss with a ghost.

No matter how you look at that book, it’s only half way through. There are still more pages and we still have the ending where the tiny bird somehow revives itself, or another more beutiful bird takes its place.

    • Overlord-G says:

As far as we’re concerned (Assuming you’re one of “us”) it’s a kiss.

Yeah, it’s more of a classic turning point in a story where the situation becomes grim/somber for the protagonist and the rightful order is restored after the climax.

  10. So I guess you are aware of how people are;

    1. dropping (if not already done with) Yomi/Mato like a previous generation of iPhone when a new one comes out?
    2. Shitting on Yomi just as much as every other BRS medium creator (You know the manga has her killed by BRS too?!! Fuckin madness!)

What in the world is wrong with people!? For the OVA they were all over Yomi/Mato like their freakin’ precious (ring of the Dark Lord Sauron)!

    WTF Like?!!!

I am so gonna rub it in up to 9000 when we get a Yomi/Mato END!

    You just wait!

    • Overlord-G says:

I stopped caring what haters had to say long ago. I’ve accepted their criticism as foolish as those of juvenile casual wrestling fans, shoryuken.com members, self proclaimed hardcore “Insert video game franchise here” fans, etc.

What’s my point making these comparisons? They’re all foolish, immature and silly criticisms. for Pete’s sake, there are 3 episodes left. Anything can happen. Giving up/dropping/boycotting so soon is incredibly pathetic.

High Five for Lord of the Rings reference!

    • Overlord-G says:

I’d rather give you a hug miss BG, if you don’t mind…unless you’re either dating another woman or married

    • Overlord-G says:

“In a robotic tone” I am sad to say, I have only heard of AKB48 upon discovering your site by chance after Googling for Symphogear news.

I thank you for the hug. I will not do indecent things to one such as yourself. I am saving that for another lovely lady…sometime in the near future.
