Nope, it’s not another Guilty Gear XX expansion. It’s a legitimate sequel at long last. No, Guilty Gear: Overture doesn’t count.

After many years of waiting and more focus being put on the Blazblue series and Persona 4 Arena, Arc System Works announced during their big 25th Anniversary Festival that they will be releasing a sequel to the Guilty Gear franchise entitled Guilty Gear Xrd Sign (ixird/third sign), or Guilty Gear XXX if you want to make an obvious joke.
The trailer depicts a fight between series protagonist Sol Badguy and his rival Ky Kisuke, and demonstrates that the game will not use 2D sprites. Built using the Unreal Engine, the game’s characters are instead 3D models with a very stylized cel-shading to maintain the aesthetics of the characters. The animation reminds me of King of Fighters XII and XIII somehow. Also, near the end of the trailer, fans also get a short glimpse of the lovely assassin with lethal blonde hair, Millia Rage, donning a new look.
The game is currently in development and will probably hit Japanese arcades before seeing a console port. Chances are the game will hit next-gen consoles rather than the PS3 and 360. Hopefully that means like Accent Core for Wii, we’ll see a Wii-U release for XXX as well as the PS4 and 720.
